Semester Project

The semester project offers students hands-on research experience and the opportunity to improve skills acquired during the Master’s programme, such as experimental and programming skills. The semester project should take up about half of a student’s time during one semester, ie. about 250-300 hours. Projects are offered by individual laboratories of the departments involved in MEST.

The semester project and the Master’s thesis are supervised by two different professors. The tutor may grant an exception if a convincing case can be made.

The student proposes the subject to their tutor, who approves and monitors the overall execution. Once an agreement is reached, the student elaborates the project plan together with their project supervisor. Every semester project must be supervised by an ETH Professor authorized to supervise semester projects for the MEST programme. It is possible to do a semester project in 7 weeks full-time outside a semester, but it is not recommended.

The project includes an oral presentation and a written report, and it is graded. The project should be registered on myStudies before commencement.

Upon successful completion of a semester project, students will be awarded 12 credits ECTS.
